What would be the optimum fish oil dosage? And what is the baseline of overdosing? To answer these questions, you need to understand the acceptable concentration of impurities found in your supplements, the possible effects of high dosage, and the benefits of high dosage with professional prescriptions.

Check the Concentration of Impurities

Impurities like heavy metals (e.g. mercury, lead and etc.), PCBs, and dioxins are inevitably present in fish oil. This is due to escalating sea pollution and some pollutants like PCBs and dioxins are fat-soluble. In view of this, FDA advises not to consume more than 2 grams or 2000mgs per day for adults and 1000mgs per day for children.

Does it consider overdosing if you take more than that? If your supplements have no proof of purity, you may run into the risk of mercury poisoning. It is safer to increase your intake, if the oils are purified and distilled molecularly to bring down the concentration of impurities lower than the international standards.

Understand the Effects of High Dosage

Currently, there are no conclusive studies that reveal any lethal or chronic health side effects if 2000mgs exceeded. However, there are some minor cases reported like belching and diarrhea. Belching will only occur when the supplements are not fresh. And, lowering down the intake will diminish the effect of diarrhea.

Fish oil is a natural blood thinner and it may result to internal bleeding if overdosed. Yet some studies have claimed no observation of this condition when a heart disease patient treated with 8000mgs of fish oil along with aspirin (anti-coagulant). But, you must consult your doctor first before taking these two together.

Maximize Intake with Medical Administration

Each individual has different body responses to EFA (Essential Fatty Acids, especially Omega-3) at particular dosage. Some can take more than what normally advised without any side effects. Thus, it is important to check with your physician to have proper monitoring on your body conditions before increasing the intake.

Some studies have shown that 4 grams of Omega-3 (combination of EPA and DHA with other fatty acids) per day can help to improve poor coronary artery health, lower triglyceride and VLDL (a bad type of cholesterol) levels. Also, 3 grams of Omega-3 and 6 supplements per day can be beneficial for children with learning and behavioral problems.

To maintain general health, recommended fish oil dosage is 1.6 grams of Omega-3 (3 capsules for 1000mgs supplement with 50 percent of Omega-3) per day for men and 1.1 grams (2 capsules) per day for women. Higher amount is usually used to treat diseases, but do not exceed the amount without consultation from your physician.
