The group was founded in 1978 by Subrata Roy. Sahara Group enters in hypermarkets in retail sector with brand name Sahara Q.

The Sahara Group is trying hard to launch a chain of retail stores and hypermarkets in carefully selected locations across the country under the brand name Sahara Q. The hypermarkets and retail stores will sell consumer products that will include Sahara's own range of packaged goods such as detergents and soaps as well as insurance and mutual fund products. Its product range include Fashion and Lifestyle Products, Fitness and Leisure Products, Clothing, Jewellery etc. We can say that this is a good move from Sahara Group to enter the retail sector or hypermarket.

Hypermarket is a store combining a supermarket and a department store. Sahara has planned to become adventurous with its recent decision to enter hypermarket. Because of variety of reasons, the hypermarket business has turned risky but the famous brand will soon introduce several retail stores at few locations in India with the name of Sahara Q. These retail stores will offer to customers a variety of products, including those of Sahara itself. Sahara's retail ambitions are not new. Sahara had tried entering retail sector back in 2009 itself when the company planned to establish 88 integrated townships across the country, which has retail outlets also. Now after great research, Subrata Roy Sahara">Sahara india Pariwar, Sahara group has decided to choose hypermarket to get in to the retail business.

The Araria Jute Project of Sahara Group is engaged in creating diversified jute products e.g. Blankets, Carpets, Floor covering, Handicrafts, Jute Chappals etc. Kasturi Handicrafts of Sahara Group is a retail store chain offering apparel for Women, Home Furnishings, Silk Carpets and Rugs, Fashion Accessories, Jewellery of Gold and Silver, Precious Stones and Artificial Jewellery, Chandeliers, Marble, Wooden, Stone and Art Metalware and Leather Products.

Retail sector is one of India's fastest growing sectors. Foundation for organized retail in India was laid by Kishore Biyani of Pantaloon Retails India Limited (PRIL). India's retail sector is growing at 30-40 per cent a year. Out of which the organized retail penetration in India is estimated at 5-8 per cent. A host of Indian business giants are entering India's hypermarket format like Aditya Birla Retail, Reliance Retail, Tata's Trent which operates the Star Bazaar stores, Shoppers Stop's subsidiary HyperCity Retail.
