There's an old idiomatic expression that says, "The only thing worse than having a job is looking for one. If you're unemployed, you're probably spending huge chunks of your time looking for another job. That's probably where this expression comes from. But, if you're out of work, there is a way to get back on your feet without a job.

What is it? Find a work-from-home job. "Yeah," you may be saying, "and just how am I supposed to do that. Most work-from-home jobs are scams." While this may be true, there are work-from-home jobs that aren't scams.

A Real Work-from-home Job That Isn't a Scam

One of these is freelance writing. I've been doing it since 1993 and I think it's the ideal work-from-home job for unemployed workers, for the following reasons:

It's Cheap and Easy to Start: If you have a computer at home -- as most do -- that's all you need to get started. The real "work" of freelance writing is not spending tons of money to get started, like most businesses, but hunting down assignments.

But, the Internet makes this so much easier than it used to be. When I first started in 1993, there weren't nearly the opportunities there are available now. If you didn't have an "in" at a publishing company, for example, it was harder to get work.

This is no longer true, which brings me to the second reason freelance writing is the ideal work-from-home job for the unemployed.

There's Tons of Work! Internet marketing has made the need for content so great that anyone with good writing skills -- you must have this -- can find freelance writing jobs. Now I'm not saying it's easy if you don't know how to market for this kind of work.

But, if you learn how to market for online writing jobs, you can be busy in no time. This is especially true in freelance writing job niches like SEO copywriting. Learn more about what SEO copywriting is.

When You're Unemployed, You Have Time: If you're collecting unemployment benefits, you can usually do so for six months. While you're conducting a job search, you can start your freelance writing career.

With six months of some money coming in, it gives you a little window of time to get your freelance writing business off the ground. You may find that you're so busy before this six month period ends, that you no longer have to look for a full-time or even part-time job.

Freelance Writing: The Perfect Career No Matter What the Economy is Doing

The world is changing. No longer can you count on having a job for years and collecting a pension. In fact, I think that in less than a generation, we're going to see worker benefits like Unions, pensions and company 401Ks fall by the wayside.

This makes it more necessary than ever for American workers -- in fact, all workers -- to find ways to either supplement their income from a job, or strike out on their own altogether.

Freelance writing is the perfect career to inoculate yourself because no matter what the economy is doing, businesses still need to market. In a recession, they need to market even more. They need copy for their websites, blogs, brochures, article marketing campaigns, etc.

Whether you decide to look for another job or not, starting a freelance writing career is possibly the best "job hunting tip" around.
