The 3 Best Ways to Sell Ebooks
It amazes me how many online articles discuss how to sell ebooks by recommending affiliate programs like ClickBank or E-junkie. They make it sound like a get-rich-quick scheme. Being an independent author who also makes and sells ebooks, take my word that this is an exaggeration and to be a bit more practical in your approach.
If you've written a book, then you can sell it as an ebook from dozens of online locations. The fact is this; while over a dozen places are possible venues for sales, there are three main ones where you must sell from. Everything else you can consider secondary, which is still a good plan.
Amazon is a must because it's the world's largest book seller and ebook seller. More readers use the Kindle than any other electronic device, and Kindle readers go through books much more than the average reader. Uploading a properly formatted ebook to Amazon is just a matter of going to DTP Amazon and following their prompts. And it's free.
Smashwords is another must and also free. They will sell your ebook and also convert it into every format e-readers can handle like pdf, epub, mobi, lrf to name a few. Smashwords has an e-bookstore that pays you 85 percent on any sale plus they also submit your ebook to other major retailers like Barnes&Noble, Apple, Sony, Kobo, Diesel and Amazon. Those retailers pay around 70 percent of any sale. Smashwords has tutorials and a Style Guide for formatting your document so it will read well on little screens. Visit Smashwords and follow along.
You should also sell ebooks from your own website and/or blog. That can easily be set up to run automatically, so people order your ebook and receive it while you're in bed. This way 100 percent of the profits go to you while the customer email list grows without resorting to pushy methods like squeeze-pages. All you need is a PayPal button that directs buyers to a download page where your ebook awaits. To fight piracy just keep simple stats of download visitors with a free company like StatCounter, and you'll know if any stealing is happening which is fixed with a quick URL change to the download page. I prefer doing this with free sites and blogs so it doesn't cost me anything, but that choice is up to you.
Those are the three best ways to sell ebooks. For more places try eBay, Scribd, YouPublish, MyEbook, Bookmato and so on, but if your experience is like mine you won't sell nearly as many from everywhere else combined as from Amazon, Smashwords (and affiliates of them), and your own websites.
